Asus B43J-A1B




These days, business laptops have to meet a wide variety of needs. Professionals require a machine that provides computing power, networking options, connections galore, and hours of battery life. The Asus B43J-A1B ($1,199.99 street) fills most of these needs, but if battery life is a major concern, then this laptop is going to disappoint.

Design
Though quite a few manufacturers, including Asus, have brought some great looking business laptops to market, like the Dell Vostro 3300 ($910 street, 3.5 stars), most laptops, like the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s ($1,504 direct, 4 stars), tend to stick to the basics. The Asus B43J-A1B keeps a conservative look, but puts a fashionable twist on it that turns basic black into something more black tie

The frame around the screen and the base of the chassis is matte plastic, but the lid and palm rest get a stylish and protective aluminum casing that resists scratches and won't attract fingerprints. The 14-inch widescreen offers a 1366 by 768 resolution for 720p video viewing, and is topped with a 2-megapixel webcam that has a built-in lens cover. It weighs a hefty 5.46 pounds

The full-sized keyboard eschews the chiclet-style design that is so popular in consumer laptops, opting instead for a more traditional design. The keyboard is also spill resistant, so you can now have lunch at your desk without the fear that a spilled drink will destroy your work computer. The touchpad is comfortably smooth and supports multi-touch, bringing two-fingered scrolling and zooming to your work machine

Features
Connectivity is one of the most important aspects of any business laptop, and the Asus B43J-A1B offers a variety of ports. There are three USB 2.0 ports (including one combination USB/eSATA port), optical drive, and jacks for both telephone and Ethernet. Connecting to an external display is also easier thanks to the VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort connections. ATI Eyefinity also allows connection of up to two additional monitors, providing significantly more visual real estate.

Security options abound, as the B43J-A1b comes with several built-in layers of protection. A fingerprint scanner provides biometric-based security. A Smart Card reader allows the use of security card-based user authentication. Intel vPro provides remote IT access and automatic disabling of lost or stolen laptops.

Our test unit had 4GB of DDR3 memory. The 320GB 7,200 rpm hard drive will likely offer plenty of storage space on its own, but users will still want to take advantage of the USB/eSATA port when connecting an external hard drive. The B43J-A1B also has an ExpressCard 34 expansion slot for further flexibility. Docking station support allows quick connection to peripherals, power, and communication devices, but will require purchasing a docking station separately.

For fast access to the Web, the Asus B43J-A1B features the same ExpressGate instant-on environment that has been used in several other Asus models this year, like the Asus U52F-BBL9($749 list, 4 stars). A dedicated ExpressGate power button allows you to enter ExpressGate from a powered-down state, skipping lengthy Windows boot times to provide instant web access.

eMachines EZ1601-01


The eMachines EZ1601-01 ($399.99 list) is an 18-inch all-in-one nettop PC. Think of it as a somewhat portable PC with a bigger screen than 17-inch notebooks that cost twice as much. The EZ1601-01 got enough computing power for light work (like schoolwork or writing), a desk-friendly size, and it's fairly inexpensive. It's a good choice for the student or writer who doesn't want the expense or bulk of a large-screen notebook, and doesn't mind being "plugged in" all the time.

Samsung Go N310-13GB




Embattled by cutthroat pricing and limited in the parts they can use, netbook makers have to be craftier than ever to come out on top. The Samsung Go N310-13GB ($450 street) is dealt the same Intel Atom parts and basic features as every other netbook, but its looks might pique your interest. The bright orange exterior is one of four colors available with this model, and the edge-to-edge glass screen and "pebble" keyboard are sure to impress. Performance-wise, the 66-Wh battery is not only big, but turned in more than nine hours of battery life. If you're willing to pay a slight premium over top-notch netbooks like the Toshiba mini NB205 and the ASUS EeePC 1000HE, the N310-13GB won't disappoint.

Toshiba Satellite U505-S2930


A full day of classes rarely occurs in one location, so the last thing you want is a laptop that feels like a bigger anchor than your textbooks. The Toshiba Satellite U505-S2930 ($800 street) strikes a good balance between weight and having enough screen real estate to keep you from scrolling incessantly. Though made out of plastic, the lid's textures are reminiscent of a fancy leather case and the parts are current enough to get you through several years of school. Its price tag, however, is a little high for a plastic design and budget parts, but better deals can be found through Toshiba's channel partners (NewEgg and Amazon)—if you look hard enough.

Lenovo IdeaPad U350


Systems based on Intel's consumer ultra-low voltage (CULV) chipsets—that is, laptops that run on budget-friendly, low-powered processors—are no longer rarities, appearing frequently on store shelves in the form of thin-and-light laptops. In speed, these CPUs rank above netbook processors by a mere grade or two, which isn't a whole lot. In return, though, the power savings can mean a great deal for battery life. The Lenovo IdeaPad U350 ($650 direct) is the latest to join the CULV family. It's a 13-inch ultraportable that deep-sixes the optical drive to achieve super-thin form factor. The U350 can be sluggish at times and the 41-Wh battery is small, but at $650, it's not like Lenovo is ripping you off.

BFG Phobos


The BFG Phobos ($3,450 direct) takes the expensive gaming PC idea to one logical conclusion: It's like a high-powered modern sports car. You may have worked on or even built gaming PCs in the past, but now the Phobos is simply something you take delivery of, and then take out for a spin. Like that new computerized and electronics-heavy sports car, don't even think of getting under the hood: You're not going to be servicing this puppy. Both machines are made for the performance enthusiast who simply no longer wants to get his hands dirty tweaking and rooting around under the hood. While that may be appealing to the late 30-something, early 40-something gamers who are rapidly aging into this demographic, it also means that this system has a pretty narrow niche appeal.

A Pair of Overclocked Radeon HD 4890 Cards




notlong ago, ET editor Jason Cross took a close look at AMD's new Radeon HD 4890 graphics card. AMD's latest graphics offspring is pitted against several cards in Nvidia's lineup, including overclocked GeForce GTX Core 216 cards and the more recently released GeForce GTX 275.
When the original 4890 shipped, ATI suggested that substantial headroom for both core and memory overclocking existed. They noted that, while the architecture was the same as the older Radeon HD 4870, a lot of tweaks were made at the engineering level to more easily dissipate heat, minimize voltage leakage, and other pesky issues. In other words, they were encouraging factory overclocked cards.
Today, we look at a pair of these cards: the XFX Radeon HD 4890 XT and the Diamond Multimedia Radeon HD 4890 XOC. Both cards use the AMD-designed, stock cooler. The XFX card clocks the core frequency up to 875MHz, a paltry 25MHz, and pushes the memory clock 100MHz, to 3.9GHz QDR (as compared to the default 3.8GHz). Diamond is a little more aggressive with the core clock, pumping it to 925MHz, as well as driving the memory to 4.2GHz QDR. Which of these cards are better? That's not a simple question. Setting clock speeds is often a delicate dance between core and memory clocks. If a mismatch exists between memory and core multipliers, you could see stalls in the pipeline as the GPU waits for memory to feed it data. Then there's the issue of cost: usually, highly overclocked cards cost more
